Quick answer: No. Take-Two’s pre-order announcement describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience, and Rockstar has not announced an online mode, a date for one, or cross-play. The current GTA Online keeps running, and Take-Two has said it will keep supporting it.
What is confirmed and what is not

| An online mode for GTA 6 later | Not announced | Unconfirmed |
| Online release date | None | Unconfirmed |
| Transfer of GTA Online characters, GTA$ or vehicles | Not announced | Unconfirmed |
| Cross-play | Not announced | Unconfirmed |
| Current GTA Online | Keeps running, with continued support | Confirmed by Take-Two |
The store listings say single-player too
The Microsoft Store lists “Single player” as one of the game’s features. On the Rockstar Store, the ESRB rating is M for Mature with an In-Game Purchases notice, but no Users Interact notice, the label ESRB gives games where players can interact online. Every trailer so far, including the 26-minute Extended Look, has shown only the story.
What Rockstar’s history suggests
Rockstar has added online modes after launch before:
| Game | Story launch | Online mode opened |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 26, 2018 | Red Dead Online beta, November 27, 2018 |
| Grand Theft Auto V | September 17, 2013 | GTA Online, October 1, 2013 |
Both times, online arrived weeks after the story. A similar path for GTA 6 is plausible, but Rockstar has not said so, and reporting so far points to a longer wait. In August, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said not to expect a multiplayer reveal anytime soon.
What happens to GTA Online?
Nothing announced changes it. At Take-Two’s shareholder meeting on September 17, 2026, CEO Strauss Zelnick called GTA Online a robust business and said the company will keep supporting it. Rockstar has announced no end date and no transfer of characters, money or vehicles to GTA 6.
- Shark Cards: buy them only for what they do in GTA Online today, since nothing carries over.
- GTA+: digital pre-orders of GTA 6 include one free month of GTA+. It applies to the current GTA Online and the GTA+ games library, not to GTA 6.
What we know from outside Rockstar
Documents from a UK employment tribunal involving former Rockstar staff mention a confidential 32-player online format discussed inside the studio. They do not say what Rockstar built, when it would launch, or how many players a final mode would hold. For scale, a GTA Online session holds up to 30 players today. Any online release date you see online comes from leakers or commentators, not from Rockstar.
Our take: buy GTA 6 as a single-player game. If you’re mainly here for multiplayer, there’s no announced reason to buy on day one. We’d also avoid spending on Shark Cards in the hope that something carries over, since nothing has been promised.
