GTA 6 Pre-Load: Start Date, How It Works and How Much Space You Need

GTA 6 Pre-Load: Start Date, How It Works and How Much Space You Need

Quick answer: You can pre-load GTA 6 from November 12, 2026, at local midnight, one week before the November 19 launch. It works for digital pre-orders and for the boxed version, which holds a download code instead of a disc. Rockstar has not announced the file size, so free up as much space as you can before November 12.

How pre-loading works

Pre-loading downloads the game ahead of time so it is ready the moment it unlocks. It does not let you play early: the game still opens at your store region’s launch time, which you can check in our GTA 6 release time guide.

  • Digital pre-orders can start downloading from local midnight on November 12. The PlayStation Store lists a 7-day pre-load for both editions.
  • Boxed copies contain a download code, not a disc. Rockstar expects them to ship and be available for pickup from November 12, and codes redeemed before launch start pre-loading from that date. You still download the entire game.
  • Ultimate Edition is digital only. If you buy the box, you get the Standard Edition and can add the Ultimate Edition Upgrade after redeeming the code.

How to start the download

  1. Make sure the pre-order, or the redeemed code, is on the account you play on.
  2. On PS5, find the game in your Game Library and select Download. On Xbox, look under My games & apps, in your full library.
  3. Turn on automatic downloads and leave the console in rest or sleep mode with internet access, so it can download overnight.

PlayStation codes are region-locked

On PlayStation, a boxed code only works with an account from the region where it was sold. A code bought in Brazil, for example, only works on a Brazilian PlayStation account, and a North American code only on US or Canadian accounts. Xbox codes are not region-locked. Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in the same country as your console account.

How much space will GTA 6 need?

Rockstar has not announced it. The Xbox Store shows an approximate size of about 329 MB, but that is a placeholder, not the real download. For comparison, GTA V’s current-generation version takes about 86.8 GB on PS5 and 94.2 GB on Xbox, and Red Dead Redemption 2 lists a 105 GB minimum. Larger figures circulating online are fan estimates, not numbers from Rockstar or Sony.

Here is how much space each console has for games out of the box:

ConsoleUsable storage
PS5 (original)667 GB
PS5 SlimAbout 842 GB
PS5 ProAbout 1.89 TB
Xbox Series X802 GB
Xbox Series S (512 GB model)364 GB

If you play on an original PS5 or a 512 GB Series S, clear space early. Current-generation games can be stored on a USB drive, but they have to run from the internal drive or an official expansion.

Bar chart of usable storage: Series S 364 GB, PS5 667 GB, Series X 802 GB, PS5 Slim about 842 GB, PS5 Pro about 1.89 TB.

Pre-load checklist

  • Pre-order digitally, or redeem your boxed code as soon as it arrives.
  • Free up storage before November 12.
  • Turn on automatic downloads and keep the console connected.
  • Check the unlock time for your store region.

Our take: the deadline that matters is November 12, not launch day. If your console is nearly full, deciding what to delete a week early is easier than doing it during launch week. You can compare your free space with our storage checker. Because the file size is unknown, even a good result there is not a guarantee.
