GTA 6 on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S: What We Know

Quick answer: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and it is not coming to PS4 or Xbox One. The PlayStation Store tags it “PS5 Pro Enhanced”, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what that changes. A Rockstar North studio head said in August that console builds were running at 30 frames per second, and a 60fps option is still undecided.

Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have not published a resolution, frame rate or list of graphics modes for any console.

Frame rate: 30fps for now, 60fps undecided

In late August 2026, Brazilian creator Davy Jones visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh ahead of the Extended Look premiere and asked Rob Nelson, the studio’s head of development, about performance. According to those reports:

  • 30fps: the console builds were running at 30 frames per second during development, on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S alike.
  • 60fps: Nelson said the technical team would have to decide whether a 60fps option comes at launch or later. He did not rule it out.
  • Resolution and ray tracing: he gave no details.

Digital Foundry looked at the Extended Look, which Rockstar captured on a standard PS5, and saw a generally stable 30fps. It noted that the video itself was 30fps, so it cannot measure the final game.

This matches Rockstar’s track record. GTA V (2013) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) launched at 30fps on consoles. GTA V only gained a 60fps Performance mode in 2022, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What “PS5 Pro Enhanced” means

It is Sony’s label for games tuned to use the PS5 Pro’s extra power. Depending on the game, that can mean a sharper image, steadier performance, extra visual effects or a higher frame rate. For GTA 6, nobody has said which.

In June, Digital Foundry said it did not expect 60fps on either the standard PS5 or the PS5 Pro, because it expects the game to be limited by the processor, and the Pro’s processor is close to the standard model’s. That is analysis, not a Rockstar statement. Either way, there is no confirmed reason to buy a PS5 Pro for GTA 6 alone.

Xbox Series S

The Series S gets GTA 6 on the same day as the Series X. Rockstar has not said how the two versions compare. Storage is the practical catch: the 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB free for games, so plan space before the November 12 pre-load. Our pre-load guide lists usable storage for every console.

Which console should you play on?

  • If you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, you can play on day one. Don’t upgrade on the promise of 60fps, which nobody has confirmed.
  • If you are buying a console for GTA 6, wait for launch-week performance tests if frame rate matters to you. Official details may also appear on the store listings near release.
  • If you only play on PC, there is no PC version yet.

Our take: no confirmed fact yet justifies buying new hardware for GTA 6 alone. If you’re already happy with your console, stay with it and look at launch-week performance tests before spending anything.
