Does GTA 6 Have Microtransactions? What Rockstar Has Said

Quick answer: Not in the game itself, according to Rockstar North. Co-studio head Rob Nelson told the hosts of Kinda Funny Games, in a preview interview published in late August 2026, that GTA 6 has no way to spend real money in the game and that no generative AI was used to make it. The only paid extra Rockstar has announced is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, sold as an add-on through the PlayStation and Microsoft stores. Rockstar would not discuss a future online mode, which is where GTA’s microtransactions have always lived.

Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick had already said in February that generative AI plays no part in how Rockstar builds its worlds. The New York Times reported that GTA 6 has more than 600,000 animations, against about 55,000 in GTA V and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Then why do the ratings mention in-game purchases?

The ESRB, Germany’s USK and the ratings shown on PlayStation Store listings all carry an In-Game Purchases notice. That notice covers any digital extra sold for real money, and the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, which Standard owners can buy at any time, is one such extra. The rating boards have not said which purchases triggered the notice, and Rockstar has not said whether anything else will be sold later.

What you can and can’t pay for

  • The game: $79.99 for the Standard Edition or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition in the US. Our editions guide compares them.
  • The Ultimate Edition Upgrade: a one-time add-on that unlocks the Ultimate content for Standard owners.
  • GTA+: Rockstar’s subscription for the current GTA Online. Digital pre-orders of GTA 6 include one free month, but it does not add anything to GTA 6 itself.
  • Shark Cards: GTA Online’s currency packs. Rockstar has announced no way to carry GTA$ or anything else over to GTA 6.

Could that change?

Nelson’s answer covers the single-player game that launches on November 19. GTA V’s story mode never sold in-game currency either; its microtransactions lived in GTA Online. Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6, so there is nothing yet to say about how one would be monetized. Our online guide tracks what is confirmed.

Our take: for the launch game, this looks like one of the easier decisions. Buy the edition you want and ignore in-game currency worries for now. The bigger question is a future online mode, and we’d wait for an announcement before worrying about or paying for anything tied to it. This is our opinion, based on the statements above.
